Born in Death by JD Robb
Book #5 2007
JD Robb's "In Death" series is one that I didn't read until a couple of years ago. Once I was hooked, I managed to catch up on 25 books in about three weeks.
In Born in Death, Mavis finally gives birth!! After nearly 6 books of a pregnant best friend I was absolutely ready for Eve's closest friend to have her child. Of course, par the norm, there were a lot of bumps along the road to get there.
Starting with birthing classes, a double homicide, planning a baby shower, a missing pregnant woman, buying Mavis a mag baby gift, a grievous insult to Roarke, and a strong urge to flee the country, or planet even, for Eve and Roarke.
A site I would definately recommend if you are just starting the In Death series is InDeath.net, which has a listing of all the books, and anthologies, in order. Now its not necessary to read these books in order, but I highly recommend it. The growth of Eve and Roarke from beginning to present is what makes these characters so interesting. The cast of characters is very large and compelling. We typically don't get anyone's perspective other than Eve's, but through her eyes we see how she learns to care for the other people in the stories and we are inevitably drawn into her life.

The Wallflower by Jan Freed
Book #4 2007
There is a lot of good things to say about this book. To sum it up... it's a cute story that is short, sweet, and a wee bit cheesy, I loved it. There were a lot of things that reminded me a bit of the movie Hiding Out with Jon Cryer and Annabeth Gish and a little bit of the movie Never Been Kissed with Drew Barrymore and Michael Vartan. (I loved both of those movies, so its no wonder I enjoyed the book.)
The plot is about a woman hiding in order to survive long enough to make it to the trial of a murder that she witnessed. Sarah's best friend is the principal of her hometown high school and offers to help by getting Sarah enrolled. Not the typical teenager, Sarah ruffles some feathers, most importantly those of her English teacher.
There are always people who can say things better than me, and in this instance it's a writer for The Romance Reader Review.
My Rating: B-

Forbidden Magic by Cheyenne McCray
Book #3 2007
This is my first book by Cheyenne McCray and it has been sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be picked up since at least September.
The characters in this book are vivid from the beginning. You get a lot of information in a short time, both about the heroine, Silver, and her borderline acceptable gray witch lifestyle and the winged hero, Hawk, that is coping with the loss of his wife.
To be honest, I was more intrigued by the secondary characters in the story. The magical plot was very well written and played out in a way that held your attention.
Something that bothered me a bit though was that the "bad guy" sex scenes seemed a bit gratuitous and not at all necessary to the development of the story or characters.
My rating: B+

Working on the TBR Pile
This month the girls and guys at Booklovers Group have decided as a mini-challenge to read only books from their TBR piles.
What is a TBR pile? Well for some of us, myself being one, there is a strange compulsion to buy books every time you go to the store. Leading to a stack, box, shelf, or room of books that are just sitting there waiting to be read.
Hence TBR = To Be Read.
My TBR pile is fairly substantial. I have three bookshelves above my desk, with two of them two books deep, full of books to be read. I also have the top bookshelf of one of my cases behind me double stacked full of books I have but haven't even opened. Plus I have the entire Bombshell series (with the exception of about 20 from the first year) sitting in my guest room waiting for me to enjoy.
The idea of getting some of those books read is a very very good idea.
So I agreed to doing the challenge.
My first obstacle is picking out of which stack to read~~ I started with the two books I have previously reviewed... one which was sitting on my shelf from the library, the other I had bought the Saturday after Christmas with my lovely Borders gift card!
Now I face a connundrum, I have been waiting since October to read Born in Death by JD Robb and today it came in from the library. I have already started Forbidden Magic, which I will finish before moving on. But since it wasn't in my TBR stack before the New Year, does it count as one of my TBR's because I have been on the waiting list for it at the library??
I sincerely doubt I will be able to hold out for the rest of the month to read it (its a 14 days only book!!) so I will probably decide it is still a TBR even though it wasn't in my TBR stack!
See, this is how the mind of a book addict works... :-D anything to rationalize reading what you want!

Darkest Dreams by Jennifer St. Giles
Book #2 - 2007
In this the second book of the Andrews sisters trilogy, Jennifer St. Giles, returns to the mystery surround the death of Alex and Sean Killdaren's former lover Helen.
In the first book, Midnight Secrets, it was believed that the killer had been caught (in a twist which had me searching for this one immediately) but when further evidence is revealed and another woman murdered the Andrews sisters begin examining the death of their cousin once again.
The hero and heroine in this book, Alex and Andromeda, are well written. They are both similar creatures and believe that they will be forced to remain alone for the rest of thier lives, Alex because of his brother, Andrie becuase of her special abilities.
I enjoyed most of the book... though there were a few times I was exasperated by the boneheaded men. But isn't that just like real life.

Slave to Sensation by Nalini Singh
Book #1 - 2007
This is a brand new author for me, Nalini Singh.
Slave to Sensation is the first book of the Psy series, where Singh has created three races of people, the Psy's who have psychic abilities and are mainly the upper crust, the humans, whom aren't really introduced too much in this book, and the changlings, which are shapeshifters and "beneath" the Psys.
Singh has other books that are in the Silhouette Desire line, so she knows how to write a good love scenes. This book was no exception, with the added psychic touch to Sascha and Hunter's scenes are droolworthy.
Overall a great book! The plotline kept me intrigued for the next story Visions of Heat which will be released in March 2007!

Happy New Year!!
Okay, I have been a total slacker at the end of last year... no updates no reviews, no Nothing!
So this is my resolution for the new year. To keep track of all my books here on this site and on bibliophil.org for the entire year!
Can I do it? The jury is split.. but I have faith that this is something I can do without a problem... the key is going to be updating as soon as I finish one.
